iPhone iOS 4 Complaints Could Be Apple's 'Vistagate'

Just when you thought it was safe to turn on your iPhone ... Antennagate may be over, but complaints are now rolling in from iPhone 3G users who downloaded the latest Apple mobile operating system.  There are reports that upgrading the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS to iOS 4 causes the phone to drag and the battery to run out more quickly. Apple has said it is investigating the issue, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal.  "My I-phone 3G was running perfectly fine, till I updated to OS 4, it's been slower than the slowest, and even turns itself off at anytime, during browsing and even during calls. I updated to 4.0.1 only to improve things a little bit. Still the problems persist," wrote a user from India who calls himself I-Phone 4.0.1 bugs. "Am cursing myself why I updated it." Worldwide Complaints The problem isn't confined to Asia. Users in the United States are reporting the same issues. Some say the iPhone 3GS now "stutters." Others say the iPod capabilities on the phone are "completely busted." Still others report the updated iPhones won't go to the home screen and take 30 seconds to respond to various commands.  One forum complainer named "Savvytraveller" said his apps are crashing or just freezing after the upgrade to iOS 4.0.1. This same users reports the handset is getting hot. The complaints go on and on, giving Apple another headache after the iPhone 4 case giveaway just eased the last one. Indeed, this isn't what Apple expected when it touted iOS 4, the newest version of the iPhone mobile operating system with the much-anticipated multitasking. Many iPhone 3GS users upgraded to tap into the multitasking capabilities, which promise to let users switch between apps while preserving battery life. iOS 4 also offers a new Folders capability that lets users organize apps into collections by dragging and dropping. On Apple's web site, the company promises, "The iOS 4.0.1 Software Update improves the formula to determine how many bars of signal strength to display on iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPhone 3G. The real signal strength remains the same, but the bars on iPhone will indicate it more precisely." Apple's Vista? But iOS 4.0.1 doesn't seem to be perfectly compatible with the 3G model. Rob Enderle, principal analyst at the Enderle Group, said the new OS is really starting to become Apple's version of Microsoft Windows Vista, a platform that plagued the software giant for months and will go down in history as a faux pas. "Apple may have become too comfortable in its leadership, and now we are getting complaints ranging from iTunes being out of date to these new software-hardware problems with the 3G," Enderle said. "What we may be seeing is that Apple was too dominant for too long, and like Microsoft when they hit Windows Vista, didn't realize that they weren't invulnerable. The end result has been a problematic platform."  What can Apple do to emerge from the negative tide it finds itself in? As Enderle sees it, Apple needs to admit it made a mistake, stop making mistakes, and, "like Microsoft eventually did with Vista, fix it."

El establecimiento del nuevo Estado da rienda suelta a todos los intereses de grupos, facciones, regiones y caudillos.

La proliferación de periódicos es impresionante. Los hay clericales, masones, antimasones, federalistas, centralistas, bolivaristas, santanderistas.

El periodismo nacional comienza a fermentar en sus páginas una nueva forma de literatura: en efecto, los primeros embriones de costumbrismo aparecen en esta época.

El mérito de esta gestación le corresponde a esa multitud de periódicos, muchos de vida efímera, que trajeron las voces, dichos, refranes y expresiones populares a la arena del debate político.

Los curas antimasónicos fueron incansables pioneros del periodismo plebeyo y precursores del género costumbrista: el presbítero Margallo concitaba las risas y burlas de los grandes caudillos militares, masones, y la admiración boquiabierta de la plebe, con sus pasquines El Gallo de San Pedro y El perro de Santo Domingo; el canónigo Cabrera publicaba el Gallo antimasón con unos versos imposibles de masticar; y el padre Ruiz, dominicano, era responsable de La tapa del cóngolo, auténtica antología periódica del disparate.

A partir de 1826, sin embargo, toda la sociedad se fue polarizando entre los partidarios y los enemigos de Bolívar, reunidos estos últimos en torno al general Francisco de Paula Santander. Esta polarización fue también literaria: el precoz Luis Vargas Tejada (1802-1829), poeta y dramaturgo de altísimo vuelo, escribió a la sombra de Santander el monólogo Catón de Utica, violenta diatriba republicana en la que el odioso César es, evidentemente, una representación de Bolívar; en tanto que Juan García del Río (1794-1856) contribuyó con sus Meditaciones Colombianas a la catarata de loas con que se endiosaba en vida al Libertador de América.

Unsexy Yahoo Muddles Into Disappointing Results

Yahoo shares took a hit Wednesday morning after the company reported disappointing second-quarter sales. Despite seeing profits rise, Yahoo missed analysts' estimates. 

Yahoo generated sales of $1.13 billion, excluding revenue passed on to partner sites, in the second quarter. That's a two percent gain over the second quarter of 2009. Yahoo's net income rose to $213.3 million, or 15 cents a share, from $141.4 million, or 10 cents a share, in the year-ago period.  

Yahoo profits rose 51 percent, buoyed in part by 19 percent year-over-year growth in display advertising. But search advertising dipped eight percent. The positive news didn't overcome analyst disappointment, and its stock fell as much as eight percent in pre-market trading. Analysts expected Yahoo to post second-quarter earnings of 14 cents a share on $1.16 billion net revenue. 

The Bartz Spin

"We're pleased that we continued to deliver strong operating income and margin expansion," said Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz. "Our search fundamentals are improving and we posted another quarter of healthy display advertising growth."  

Bartz has to remain optimistic in the second year of the turnaround effort she's spearheading, despite the fact that Yahoo continues to lose momentum in the search market. Yahoo's story is that it's continuing to progress toward its objectives. But Yahoo seems to be moving too slow, much like the general economy, even while Google and Apple defy the recession. 

"Yahoo is in an enormously competitive environment, especially with Facebook on the one side with display advertising and Google on the other side with its dominance in the search space," said Greg Sterling, principal analyst at Sterling Market Intelligence. "Investors were disappointed and some of the analysts were critical that it came in below the guidance." 

What Yahoo Needs To Do

Under Bartz, Yahoo appears more disciplined. The company has looked at cost-cutting measures to drive up margins. But that's not enough in an ultra-competitive Internet market. Yahoo needs to be more aggressive on the consumer side, Sterling said, growing through new properties and pushing out into mobile and other areas. 

Yahoo would argue it has done that. The company deepened its integration with Facebook through Yahoo Pulse, launched new e-mail and messenger apps for the Android and iPhone platforms, extended a global partnership with Samsung, inked a strategic alliance with Nokia and Sony, and made some acquisitions in the second quarter. But none of that has been enough to excite the market. 

"It's very challenging. I don't know what I would do exactly if I were in Carol Bartz's position. Yahoo is still is a very prominent company, but it's struggling to gain momentum even though they do still have some industry-leading properties," Sterling said. "In this post-Bing era where they are going to get this more relevant index and save all this money, they really need to deliver in terms of the user experience. So far it hasn't been interesting or sexy enough to captivate people."

What is needed for the Christian faith to take deep roots in a person and for it to stay strong and healthy? The experts tell us that three forces must cooperate so that a person may reach faith and in addition grow and mature in it: God, the person himself/herself, and the Community of believers.

1. God. We know that God through Baptism gives the initial grace so that faith can be born in and grow in a Christian. This faith received in Baptism is a seed. The seed has been made to produce a plant and the plant has been made to produce fruit. For the seed of faith to grow in the soul, God has to continue giving His grace.

Throughout our long life, how can we obtain that grace of faith? I think God gives us a fundamental condition for it: He wants us to ask Him for that grace with humility and childlike confidence. The Apostle James tells us in his letter: “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble” (4:6). The Lord Himself teaches us in the Gospel to ask with confidence: “When you pray and ask for something, believe that you have received it, and you will be given whatever you ask for” (MK 11: 24).

2. The person himself/herself. Faith is a gift from God, but it is also a personal response from the man/woman himself/herself. He/she can and should collaborate in the growth of his/her faith. It should be lived and fulfilled in his/her daily life. He/she should test it with deeds and acts of concrete faith. The seed which is not tended to or nourished cannot mature; it withers and dies. I believe that is the reason for the weakness and even the disappearance of faith in many of our contemporaries. 

A sage from India, after traveling through Europe, said: “In Europe, I found a Sunday Christianity and a daily heathenism.” Faith which does not inspire daily work, contact with others, or the joy and suffering of each day…..cannot grow; it diminishes and dies sooner or later.

3. The community of believers. The third basic condition, in addition to the grace of God and human collaboration, is the Community of believers. Faith can only take roots in a person when he/she is

part of a Christian community because faith is not a private matter.

In the community, he/she receives revelation from God and he/she renders a response of faith.

Therefore, St. Paul says: “And how can they believe if they have not heard the message? And how can they hear if the message is not proclaimed?” (Rom 10:14): But it is not enough to only preach with words. It is more important and more fruitful to preach with a life of faith. Life is only born of life; and a vital faith is only born of a vital faith.

I believe this is another reason why so many people today cannot believe: Many educators and preachers of faith – parents, priests, teachers, etc. – do not embody faith in their persons or in their lives. They only speak of faith, but do not live from it. Therefore, their message is not convincing or uplifting.

Here enters, with much force, the importance of our Christian communities and our Christian groups.

What is most fundamental and decisive for being born into and growing healthily in the faith are our Christian families, the first faith communities. The parents are not only the great educators of the faith for their children, they are also reflections of God Himself to their children. By means of the relationship with the parents, the child experiences the relationship with God the Father and with the Heavenly Mother, the Blessed Virgin. Thus, in a natural and spontaneous way, a personal attachment to God comes forth.

The essence of faith is not believing in certain truths or articles of faith, it is believing in a person, it is believing in a personal God. Maturing in the faith means deepening my intimate attachment to Christ and to the Triune God.

Therefore, let us ask God to grant us the grace to grow permanently in the faith and to grow in personal attachment to Him, and may our crises of faith only be crises of growth. Let us also ask the Blessed Virgin, Mother and model of faith, that she strengthen us and accompany us on our journey to the House of the Father.
